Professional development units (PDUs) are one of the primary salary-building elements of ProComp. They are designed to motivate teachers and student services professionals (SSPs) to increase their knowledge and skills on topics that directly relate to their classroom instruction or their discipline.

Only ProComp educators, however, may earn salary increases for Professional Development Units.

After testing during the 2006-2007 contract year, the PDU Handbook, forms and process have been changed to reflect input from participants. There are  sample proposals, as well as a completed work sample to help applicants understand what is expected by reviewers. There is  also  a rubric to guide your work and help you organize artifacts for  your work sample.

Educators who decide not to pursue a pre-approved PDU have professional discretion around the content of a personal  PDU.

  • The methodology for conducting PDU activities is determined by the educator and may include working individually or with a team.
  • Educators have the option of completing any part of the three-step process (study, demonstrate, reflect) during or outside of the regular workday as appropriate.
  • Everyone must collaborate with peers during at least one of the three steps (study, demonstrate, reflect).

A Professional Development Unit must support the teacher’s current assignment or a proposed assignment. The Proposed Assignment Declaration Form may be submitted only once a year and allows an educator to notify his or her supervisor and Human Resources of a desire to prepare to work in a new assignment. The supervisor’s signature is required to show notification, but not approval. If a PDU is to support your preparation for a proposed assignment, a copy of the declaration form must be turned in to  the PDU Administrator, in the Leadership Development Office.

For more detailed information, you are encouraged to read the PDU Handbook. It explains the  options and provides a step-by-step guide to submit a proposal for and complete a PDU.  You may choose to complete a pre-approved PDU. The person who prepared the pre-approved PDU will meet with you and explain what you need to do. The pre-approved PDU still requires you to take the proposed plan and adapt it to your personal situation.

You will register online to indicate your intent to  submit a personal PDU proposal.

Once you have finished writing your PDU proposal you will submit your work to the PDU Administrators via email.
